Italian Package Bees
Over 90% of beekeepers have Italian Bees in their hives. We highly recommend new beekeepers to start beekeeping with Italian package bees for sale because they are the most gentle of all honey bees. Italians bees are also excellent foragers and honey producers. Italian from the commercial and breeding point of view lies in a happy synthesis of a great number of good characteristics.
Among these we must mention industry, gentleness, fertility, reluctance to swarm, zeal for building comb, white honey-capping, a willingness to enter supers, cleanliness, resistance to disease, and the tendency to collect flower honey rather than honey dew. In one other characteristic has proved exceptional and that is in her resistance to acarine. They are chemical free, no big problem with any diseases or pests like varroa mites. They build up fast in the spring, are very good honey producers, gentle and are low swarm.
Carniolan Package Bees
We recommend that beekeepers with 3 years of beekeeping experience or more can purchase these package bees. Carniolans are known for their winter hardiness, rapid spring buildup, and exceptional honey production. They show excellent resistance to tracheal mites and are great comb builders
Carniolan bees, overall, are more aggressive than Italian honey bees. They are favored among beekeepers for several reasons, not the least being its ability to defend itself successfully against insect pests while at the same time being extremely gentle in its behavior toward beekeepers. These bees are particularly adept at adjusting worker population to nectar availability.
They rely on these rapid adjustments of population levels to rapidly expand worker bees after nectar becomes available in the spring and again to rapidly cut off brood production when nectar ceases to be available in quantity. They meet periods of high nectar with high worker populations and consequently store large quantities of honey and pollen during those periods. They are resistant to some diseases and parasites that can debilitate hives of other subspecies.
Russian Hybrid Package Bees
The Russian Hybrid honey bee is black or dark brown in color. Russians are well suited for colder weather and show some mite resistance. Like the Carniolans, Russian bee packages overwinter with a smaller population. They are slower to build up in the spring, waiting for good nectar availability. Once natural nectar is available, they will explode in population. This tendency causes excessive swarming unless the beekeeper is observant.
Some beekeepers report that Russian bees also tend to be a bit fussy and defensive. As with other bees, this characteristic is likely when the colony is allowed to requeen itself. Even though they show some resistance, most of the Russian bees are not able to handle varroa without beekeeper intervention.
